Hip pain

Why your hip hurts

Pain around the hip can come from the joint itself, from the surrounding muscles and tendons, or it can be referred from another part of the body. In practice I most often see:

  • limited hip extension – shortened hip flexors from prolonged sitting,
  • groin pain – overload of the hip flexor and adductor attachments, typically after sport or in a deep squat,
  • running overload – a rapid increase in training load, insufficient glute strength and reduced pelvic stability,
  • pain on the outer side of the hip.

Hip pain can also come from the lower back or pelvis – that’s why I look at the bigger picture.

How I work

  1. Initial assessment – we talk about where and when it hurts, what makes it worse and how you move during the day.
  2. Diagnosis – by looking, movement and touch.
  3. Manual therapy – manual release of muscle chains in their wider context.
  4. Targeted exercises – targeted exercise for strength and long-term relief.
