Shoulder pain

Why your shoulder hurts

Smooth arm movement depends on the shoulder and shoulder blade working together (the scapulohumeral rhythm). Shoulder pain is often linked to scapular instability, reduced mobility of the thoracic spine or overloaded rotator cuff muscles.

  • impingement – pain when lifting the arm out to the side and overhead,
  • an overloaded rotator cuff – after swimming, tennis, volleyball or the gym,
  • pain referred from the cervical spine into the shoulder,
  • a stiff shoulder after a long period of protecting it or after an injury.

How I work

  1. Initial assessment – we talk about where and when it hurts, what makes it worse and how you move during the day.
  2. Diagnosis – by looking, movement and touch.
  3. Manual therapy – manual release of muscle chains in their wider context.
  4. Targeted exercises – targeted exercise for strength and long-term relief.
